Our School

St Cuthbert with St Matthias CE Primary School is a Church school with a strong Christian ethos.

The school is in central London, close to transport and cultural opportunities such as museums and art galleries. The building has three stories and includes class rooms and a large hall. Outside there are two playgrounds or sport and play and a school garden where pupils can grow flowers, fruit and vegetables. The playground has a living green screen to protect pupils from traffic fumes.

Classes

It is a one-form entry school for boys and girls from Nursery age (3 years) and pupils move on to their secondary schools after Year 6 (10-11 years old). There up to 30 children in seven classes.

Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) (3-5 year olds)

Key Stage 1 (5 – 7 year olds)

Key Stage 2 (7 – 11 year olds)

School Council

Our School Council, 2 members from each class, have been voted in by their classmates. They meet fortnightly to discuss key issues and how, together with the school staff, they can support or implement actions.

Council members ask their classes for their opinions on current topics, have discussions around key issues and encourage their class member sto take part in competitions. For example, they have asked the children to make posters reminding us about Online Safety, and asked children to consider 'How British Are We?'.

Secondary Transition

In their first term of Y6, children will need to complete applications for Secondary School entrance. We recommend that parents and children should be making decisions about their Secondary School in their Y5 year. We encourage parents to start thinking about Secondary School options when their children are in Y4. This way both the child and his/her parent have a chance to visit Secondary Schools on Open Days in the autumn term of Y5. Secondary School websites offer information which is useful in decision making, and it is important that the choice of Secondary School suits your child’s academic and extra-curricular needs and aspirations.

We are a feeder school for Chelsea Academy and Holland Park Secondary School.

Chelsea Academy is a church school. Children attending a church Primary School can apply for Foundation places at church Secondary Schools. Applications are more likely to be successful if the child attends church regularly.

During the summer term we organise a transition programme for the Y6 children in preparation for their transition into Secondary School. We link with different agencies to ensure that children have a variety of experiences such as: First Aid, Bike Proficiency, Circle Times coping with bullying and budgeting.

History of the School

The history of the school began over a hundred years ago, when the church of St Matthias stood on the site of the infant playground. A small choir school for boys was open as a Day school on 9th February 1874. Fields surrounded the church and school and Warwick Lane (now Warwick Road) was lined with trees. Towards the end of the 19th century, houses were built on the fields and a new school building was required. It was opened in April 1899 at the cost of £6000. During the last war the Church of St Matthias was bombed but remained until the fifties.

Families like to send their children to us, as the local school in their neighbourhood. We are a church school who welcome children from all faiths and cultures. The children and parents that attend our school bring a rich diversity of languages and ways of life. At any one time there can be 26 different home languages.
